How to replace a character in a video with AI
AI character replacement explained: swap the person in a real clip for your own character, choose between PixVerse Swap and MiniMax Recast, and avoid mistakes.
What character replacement is
Character replacement keeps a real clip (the location, camera move, timing and original audio) and swaps the person in it for a different character from your photo. It is different from Kling Motion Control, which recreates the performance as a new video around your character; replacement edits the video you already have.
Two replacement models, two jobs
VidBoss AI has two models that edit the original footage. Both are built for replacing a person, and both keep the clip's soundtrack. The table below shows their current limits.
- PixVerse Person Swap: 720p, clips under 30 seconds, a low flat price per clip. Best for meme remakes and quick tests. Works best with one clearly visible person.
- MiniMax H3 Max Recast: 720p or 1080p and the highest-fidelity replacement, keeps cuts and audio. Clips must be 5 to 30 seconds, and each uncut shot 15 seconds or shorter. Best for ads and polished posts.
- Replacing a pet rather than a person? Use Kling Motion Control in the Motion Control tool instead: it rebuilds the performance with your animal as a new video.
Step by step
- Open the Studio and choose Replace Character (under Video tools).
- Upload the clip you want to change as the Source video.
- Add the new character: a clear photo or a saved character.
- Open Model and pick PixVerse Person Swap or MiniMax H3 Max Recast (Recast also lets you choose 1080p).
- Check the price on the Generate button; the studio shows the exact price before you generate.
- Generate, then download the result from Projects.
If the swap fails
If the model you picked can't make the video, VidBoss automatically tries the next model in this order: PixVerse Swap, MiniMax H3 Recast, Kling 3.0 Motion Pro, Kling 3.0 Motion Standard and Kling 2.6 Motion. It uses the credits already reserved and skips any backup that would cost more than the price you were shown, so you are charged once. If every model fails, the credits are refunded automatically.
Keep in mind that a Kling Motion backup recreates the performance as a new video, so its background can differ from your original clip.
Get a cleaner swap
- Use clips where one person is clearly visible and not covered by objects for long.
- Match the character photo to the clip: a similar angle and framing help.
- For Recast, trim the clip so each uncut shot is 15 seconds or shorter.
- Only replace people in footage you own or have permission to edit, and never use someone's likeness without consent.

Common questions
Is character replacement the same as a face swap?
It goes further: the whole person (face, hair, body and outfit) is replaced by your character, while the scene, movement and audio of the original clip stay.
Does it keep the original audio?
Yes. Both replacement models on VidBoss AI keep the audio of your clip.
Can I replace a dog or cat in a video?
PixVerse Swap and Recast are built for people. For pets, use Kling Motion Control, which recreates the moves with your animal as a new video.
What if the generation fails?
VidBoss automatically tries the backup models on the same credits. If none of them succeeds, the credits are refunded automatically.
